HURRICANES should NOT be named after PEOPLE – its EMBARRASSING and INSULTING. HOW ABOUT GREEK LETTERS INSTEAD?

At first I was amused about a hurricane named Sandy.  Maybe the hurricane could clean up DC or and there might be an amusing headline.

But it is completely out of hand.  I am embarrassed more than amused.  It is enough to make me go back to my given name:  Elwood.  I like Elwood for special things like business cards, introductions, and scholarly articles.  But it is too formal for everyday use.  So I go by Sandy.  It was bad enough that it is a girl’s nickname (except in the UK where it is short for “Alexander”, as in Sandy McGrath [Eric Liddell's personal coach according to Chariots of Fire!]  That was a good use of Sandy.) but now it is associated with death and destruction.  Try these headlines:

Sandy’s aftermath:  33 dead, millions without power

Now I have a decent temper that I try to control with the Lord Jesus’ help.  But that is much even for me!

Sandy rips Atlantic City Boardwalk

Wow!  And I don’t even drink!

Celebs share concern for victims of Sandy

I had to skip over that one.  Maybe I should be arrested…mass murder, aggravated vandalism?  Here’s a funny one:

How Sandy will test Obama, Romney

I would have liked to test the candidates with a few good questions like what will you do about bad UN Treaties or the Trans Pacific Partnership or Libya.  But that didn’t happen.

Here’s my favorite one so far:

Sandy shutters Atlantic City Casinos

I always want to be a force for holiness!

But I have made my point.  Real names should not be used for hurricanes.  It’s insulting and embarrassing.  Simple use Greek letters instead, or the military letter system (Alpha, Bravo, Charley…) although the real names should be factored out.  Upsilon is just fine as a storm name.  Time for the real names to go.
